The Question Of Identity

In today's post, we will explore the profound theme of identity, particularly from a Christian perspective. It effectively highlights the struggle many face in defining themselves, contrasting societal pressures with the search for a deeper, more authentic self.

***********************************

In a world constantly telling us who to be, the question of identity remains one of the most profound struggles we face. Are we defined by our past, our culture, our achievements, or our failures? Or is identity something deeper—something unshaken by external forces?

From childhood, we inherit names, beliefs, and expectations. Society molds us, teaching us how to fit in. But at some point, we begin to ask: “Is this really me?”

Many people had no business being drug addicts, prostitutes, etc. But somehow, along the path to discovering purpose, the norms and influence of society caught up with them.

This very situation was expressed in the life of Tamar, the daughter of King David and sister of Absalom. Tamar was a beautiful young lady born into a royal family. This was her identity, this was her pride—being a princess.

The king’s virgin daughters wore apparel of many colors, which Tamar had until an event happened that caused her to tear the apparel of many colors and put ashes on her head, expressing her shame, dejection, and humiliation.

Tamar was forced by Amnon, her half-brother, to lay with him; and this evil act ruined her life forever, shattering the sense of identity she had about herself. She literally remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house (2 Samuel 13).

If only Tamar looked past her experience and sought for healing in God, she would have been restored to her original state of royalty. Instead, she chose to be desolate in her brother's house.

Just like Tamar, many people have gone through devastating situations that caused them to lose their sense of identity, leaving them as wanderers seeking their true identity in all the wrong places. Many people engage in all sorts of immoral acts just to feel accepted.

And this is why many people go in circles without any significant achievement to show forth. The issue of indecent dressing, the act of engaging in sexual immorality (in a bid to feel loved and accepted), prostitution, transgenderism, drug addiction, amongst many others, stems from the lack of knowing one’s true identity.

From Scriptures, which is the only standing truth, identity is first our source of existence. We didn’t exist from empty space; there was an actual deliberation on how we were to be made, and what image we were to be made in similitude of. Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock…

We were made in the similitude of God. He is our source of existence. So, the first thing that should come to our minds when the question of identity strikes is that our source of existence is God, and in Him is our identity and should always be.

Unfortunately, the divine identity God gave to man in the beginning was corrupted by the intrusion of sin, through the devil. When man fell in the Garden of Eden, he no longer found himself worthy to be in God’s presence; he hid himself.

Although created by God, he lived with a false identity and bore a contrary nature to that of God (the nature of sin). This is the root of the false identity people bear about themselves—separation from God.

And this is why Jesus Christ had to come to pay the price of His life for you and me, that we may be restored to the original design of God.

A man separated from God is a man clueless about his identity and purpose. Even worse, such is merely a living body, not a living soul. Jesus Christ is the answer to the question of identity. Know Him, and know who He has made you.

Dear woman, you are beyond your body; you are beyond the skimpy dresses you put on; you are beyond the trauma you might have experienced; you are beyond the lies the enemy has told you; you are worth much more!

You don’t seem to identify any greatness or uniqueness to you, right? That’s because there’s a void to be filled, and that’s accepting Jesus Christ into your life. He alone can give the answer to the question of your identity.

Ready to make that big decision that counts? Ready to know your true identity? Ready to journey into a life of purpose and freedom? Then you should say this prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I come to you today, believing in my heart that you died for my sins that I may have a new life. I ask that you forgive me my sins, make me your own, open me up to my true identity and help me remain in this path of life I have chosen. Amen.”

If you said that word of prayer, congratulations! Welcome to God’s big family!
