It effectively highlights the struggle many face in defining themselves, contrasting societal pressures with the search for a deeper, more authentic self. If you seek to have answers to your question of identity, click here to read.
In today's post, we will explore the profound theme of love, particularly from a Christian perspective. It effectively highlights:
- What the world says love is.
- The effect of the distorted idea of what love is in the lives of young individuals.
- What love really is.
Let's dive in! 😉
*************************
The world's definition of love is often shallow and fleeting. According to the dictionary, love is "an intense feeling of deep affection" or "a feeling of deep romantic or sexual attachment". This perspective emphasises emotions and physical attraction, reducing love to a mere feeling that can come and go.
In today's society, love is frequently associated with romantic relationships, sex, and personal gratification. The media, movies, and music often portray love as an all-consuming passion that can lead to happiness and fulfilment. However, this narrow view of love can lead to disappointment, heartbreak, and a never-ending search for something more.
The world's definition of love also tends to focus on self-love and personal satisfaction. We're often encouraged to prioritise our own needs, desires, and happiness above all else. While self-care and self-love are important, this mindset can lead to a self-centered and superficial understanding of love.
This distorted idea of what love is can have severe effects on the lives of young individuals which include:
Emotional Distress
1. Unrealistic Expectations: Young people may expect romantic relationships to be like fairy tales, leading to disappointment and heartbreak when reality sets in.
2. Emotional Rollercoaster: The emphasis on intense emotions and passion can lead to an emotional rollercoaster, causing young individuals to feel anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed.
Unhealthy Relationships
1. Toxic Relationships: The focus on self-gratification and personal satisfaction can lead young individuals to tolerate or even seek out toxic relationships that prioritise their own needs over mutual respect and care.
2. Codependency: The distorted idea of love can foster codependent relationships, where young individuals become overly dependent on their partner for emotional validation and self-worth.
Identity Crisis
1. Self-Worth Tied to Relationships: Young individuals may tie their self-worth to their relationships, leading to an identity crisis when the relationship ends or doesn't meet their expectations.
2. Confusion and Self-Doubt: The distorted idea of love can cause young individuals to question their own emotions, desires, and values, leading to confusion and self-doubt.
Missed Opportunities for Meaningful Connections
1. Superficial Relationships: The emphasis on physical attraction and emotional intensity can lead young individuals to prioritise superficial relationships over meaningful connections with others.
2. Lack of Emotional Intimacy: The distorted idea of love can cause young individuals to miss out on emotional intimacy and deep connections with others, leading to feelings of isolation and disconnection.
Long-Term Consequences
1. Difficulty in Forming Healthy Relationships: The distorted idea of love can make it challenging for young individuals to form healthy, fulfilling relationships in the long term.
2. Emotional Baggage: The emotional distress and unhealthy relationships that result from the distorted idea of love can lead to emotional baggage that can affect young individuals' mental health and well-being for years to come.
In contrast, the biblical definition of love emphasises sacrifice, commitment, and selflessness. Love is not just a feeling but a choice and a nature. It is an action that puts others before ourselves. This kind of love is not limited to romantic relationships but extends to our relationships with God, family, friends, and even our enemies.
Ultimately, the world's definition of love falls short of the true meaning of love. By embracing a more subtle and selfless understanding of love, we can experience deeper connections, more meaningful relationships, and a greater sense of purpose and fulfilment.
According to scriptures, love is a fundamental aspect of God's nature and character. Here are some key biblical teachings on what love really is:
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV)
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
From this scripture, we can learn the characteristics of love, and most importantly, the key attributes that really testifies to the authenticity of love a person might claim to have towards God, the people around, and even one's self.
Many young individuals have fallen victim to the distorted idea of what love is, which has affected their view of what love is, and this distorted idea of love must be changed. Love is:
1. Patient: Love is willing to wait and endure difficult circumstances.
2. Kind: Love shows compassion, empathy, and care for others.
3. Not envious: Love is not resentful or jealous of others' success or possessions.
4. Not boastful: Love does not seek to elevate oneself above others.
5. Not proud: Love is humble and recognises its limitations.
6. Not self-seeking: Love prioritises the needs and well-being of others.
7. Not easily angered: Love is slow to anger and quick to forgive.
8. Keeps no record of wrongs: Love does not hold grudges or keep track of past hurts.
9. Rejoices with the truth: Love celebrates what is true, noble, and good.
10. Always protects: Love seeks to safeguard and care for others.
11. Always trusts: Love has faith in others and in God's goodness.
12. Always hopes: Love looks forward to a brighter future.
13. Always perseveres: Love endures through challenges and difficulties.
God's Love
The Bible also teaches that God is love (1 John 4:8) and that His love is:
Unconditional: God's love is not based on our worthiness or performance (Romans 5:8)
Eternal: God's love is everlasting and never-ending (Jeremiah 31:3).
Sacrificial: God's love led Him to sacrifice His only Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation (John 3:16).
Love is a selfless, patient, kind, and enduring quality that reflects God's nature and character.
With the understanding you now have about love, I believe you can now test to see if the love you profess to God or fellow people around you is actually what love is. Also, you can shield yourself and guard your heart from many individuals who have bastardised love and its true meaning.
Do you feel unloved or desire to really express love to God, yourself and people around you but do not know how to? Then, you need to meet with love personified, who is no other being but God. The journey to being loved and truly express love begins with a simple prayer that goes thus: "Lord Jesus, I come before you today with the acknowledgement that you are love, and that you died on the cross for me. I ask that you forgive me my sins, make me your own, teach me to love you and remain on this path I have chosen. Amen."
